Stone Mountain Stae Park Trout Surveys

Hey folks,

I’ve established a few dates for possible trout related work this spring and summer.  I’d happily accept any volunteer help.  If you can pass the information around that would be great.  Interested individuals can contact me by phone or email.

The dates are:

April 8th and 9th

May 27th and 28th

June 10th and 11th

July 16th and 17th

August 12th and 13th

September 9th and 10th

I have two main types of work planned.

(1)    Re-visit all known wild brook trout populations within and nr Stone Mountain State Park.  We’ll electrofish those stream sections, capture brook trout, and collect a small piece of their anal fin for genetic testing.  This work will require some hiking, and in some cases, fairly strenuous bushwhacking.

(2)  Survey wild trout streams in the park to get an idea of abundance and sizes of wild trout.  This work will involve electrofishing as well.  All fish will be identified, counted, and we’ll collect length and weight information (trout and nongame fish).  This work should be less strenuous, simply because the survey sites will be closer to roads and marked trails.

I can pretty much tailor the survey trip to accommodate volunteers.  Those that want to get way back and see some not too often visited country can do so, but I’ll have projects that are less strenuous in nature as well.  I can also accommodate shorter work periods.  Even if you only have three hours to spare, I can find something for us to do.  All work periods are weekdays, and I apologize for this since I know many cannot get off of work.  I really, really appreciated all the assistance I received last year.  It was not only very helpful, but a lot of fun as well.  I really enjoyed meeting all of you that came out!

Thanks again and definitely drop me a line or email if you have any questions,
